March 6, 2013 Google Update

Based on chatter around the web, on sites like Webmaster World and Search Round Table, and the number of people searching things like, “has my website been penalized by Google?” and “how to tell if I have a Google penalty”, Google appears to be at it again. On March 6, 2013, webmasters around the globe experienced sharp increases or decreases in their organic search rankings and traffic. Google has been silent, but we saw some similar activity back in December – suggesting that Google may not always acknowledge the changes they’re making.

At this point, and based on the forum threads, it’s unclear as to why the websites that saw their rankings tank were flagged. Was it due to unnatural links, over-optimization of on-page factors, or both? It’s probably too early to tell.

Some webmasters claim to have done nothing. Other say that the only change they made was to an H1 or H2 tag. A few brave souls have openly admitted that their backlink profiles are questionable and they suspect that engaging in various link schemes may be the reason their sites tanked.

Stay tuned and we’ll keep you updated as the picture becomes more clear.
